Abstract

1355075 Electrostatic spray coating ELEC TROGASDYNAMICS Inc 6 May 1971 [6 May 1970] 13482/71 Heading B2F Liquid coating material is hydraulically displaced, by an atomising nozzle assembly 30, 34, 36, through a locus of atomisation to convert it from a coherent liquid into a particulate spray by interaction with air, a corona discharge current is then directed from a primary corona discharge electrode 84 through the moving coating material at a location intermediate the point of liquid emission and the point of complete atomisation and in a direction substantially transverse to the direction of advance of the material, to be collected by an electrically floating electrode 90. In the figure, electrode 84 is electrically connected, via conductive components of the nozzle assembly, to an electrogasdynamic generator 18 to emit a negative corona discharge from the exposed terminal end 88, while floating electrode 90 has two terminal ends, one, 92, positioned substantially diametrically opposite, slightly downstream of terminal end 88 to collect the charge from electrode 84, and the other, 94, extending either rearwardly as shown or forwardly as in Figs. 2 and 4 (not shown) to form a tertiary corona discharge to provide a current flow to earth. This terminal end is preferably disposed such that in use the distance between it and the nearest electrical earth is not less than 10% of the distance between it and the workpiece being coated.
