Abstract

1487310 Corona charging apparatus IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 13 Nov 1974 [21 Nov 1973] 53940/73 Heading H1X [Also in Division H2] Apparatus for charging particles comprises a duct with at least its inner surface conducting, a stream of insulating gas carrying the particles through the duct, an earthed corona discharge electrode within the duct and means for applying a voltage to the inner surface of the duct. As shown, a fan 16 blows air, in which particles are entrained, round a circuit comprising a tube 10 made of conductive material and tubes 12, 14 made of insulating material. A wire 18, held coaxially in tube 10 by insulating supports 20, 22, is earthed by a wire 19 passing through an insulator 24 in the wall of tube 10, which is connected to a high voltage generator 26 so that a corona discharge occurs between wire 18 and tube 10. Tube 14 is surrounded by a toroid 28 of conductive material, to which is connected a needle 30 projecting into tube 14. Because of the charge on the particles, the toroid 28, becomes charged through needle 30 to a very high voltage. Triboelectric charging may also take place, in which case the materials of the tubes and the powder are so chosen that the polarity of the triboelectric charge on the powder is the same as that produced by corona charging. The charged particles may be ejected from a duct instead of being circulated, and they may be liquid droplets instead of solid particles, or solid particles in a liquid.
