Abstract

1,120,292. Spark erosion. INDUSTRIELLE ELEKTRONIK AGIE LOSONE BEI LOCARNO, A.G. FUR. 1 Oct., 1965 [15 July, 1965], No. 41840/65. Heading B3V. [Also in Divisions G3 and H2] Electro-erosion apparatus is supplied from a pulse-generator (not shown) over a transistor switch TR1 and the working current passes through a resistor 11 across which is connected a circuit 2 including a relay 25 which operates to close contacts 26, 21 when a capacitor 24 is fully charged. Thus if an arc occurs in the working gap between the electrode 106 and a workpiece 107 a relatively large current passes and capacitor 24 charges up and operates relay 25; at the same time the electrode feed motor M, under the control of a regulating device 5, reverses to retract the electrode 106 from the workpiece, the armature voltage of the motor then being such that a signal of positive potential is produced at point 508. This signal is applied over transistors TR2, TR3, TR4 in a circuit 4 to operate a relay 45 whereby contacts 43 and 44 are closed. With both relays 25 and 45 operated, an A.C. supply on lines 102, 103 is connected over contacts 21, 26, contacts 43, 44, a diode 36 and a valve 39 associated with a time-delay circuit 37, 38, to operate a relay 310 whereby the supply to the electro-erosion apparatus is interrupted by way of contact 33, a fault indicator 311 is energized by way of contact 34 and a device 6 is operated by way of contact 35. The device 6 acts to charge one or more of the pulse generator output parameters, e.g. pulse frequency, pulse amplitude, or pulse width so that when the system automatically starts up again, i.e. when relays 25 and 45 fall off, arcing is less likely to occur. Electric switches or transductors may replace the relays 25, 45 and 310. Thus, the protective system responds only when the arc persists and the electrode is being retracted, and the Specification describes how this obviates unnecessary actuation under certain operating conditions.
