Abstract

In a steam generator having a main firing system and a low load firing system delivering a flame to the central region of the combustion chamber, the vertical location of the flame from the low load system is variable. In one embodiment, the vertical location of the flame from the central low load burner 5 which is protected by cooling water coils 4, is varied by varying the direction and quantity of recirculated flue gas delivered beneath mushroom valve 33. In a modification, a telescopic retractable central burner is moved vertically to adjust the flame height (Fig. 4, not shown). The low load burner may be mounted on an arm pivoted about a horizontal axis at the side of the combustion chamber so that it can rest in a recess when not in use. The position of the burner or the amount of flue gas recirculated may be automatically controlled together withthe flow of feed water, of attemperating water to the superheater and of fuel and air.
