Abstract
In a process for operating a steam-raising oilfired boiler, magnesium in the form of particles which will pass a 1/16 inch sieve and will be retained on a 100 B.S. sieve is injected into the boiler combustion chamber in a direction between 30 below and 60 above the horizontal and in a direction-as seen in plan-making an angle between 45 and 135 degrees with the direction in which fuel is injected, in such a manner that a heat reflecting layer of magnesium oxide is maintained on the surface of a predetermined section of the combustion chamber wall tubes. In the embodiment shown, magnesium is injected on a section comprising the four walls of the boiler between the planes indicated at 25 and 26, by means of injection nozzles 20, 21 and (22), (23) (Fig. 2, not shown). This section includes the upper three of the four banks of burner nozzles 18.
