Abstract

1,090,097. Printing apparatus. ROLAND OFFSETMASCHINENFABRIK FABER & SCHLEICHER A.G. Dec. 13, 1965 [Dec. 17, 1964], No. 52924/65. Heading B6C. In order to prevent the differences in register which sometimes occur in an offset sheet-fed rotary press at the end of a sheet being fed between the blanket and impression cylinders, the grippers on the impression cylinder are so constructed that the front edge of the sheet held by the grippers is deformed in selected zones in a direction radial of the cylinder. Each set of grippers and gripper pads are housed in a longitudinal gap in the surface of the cylinder, the pads being fixed thereto such that they may be moved by varying amounts in a direction at right-angles to the sheet fed to the cylinder. In the embodiment of Fig. 3 the pads 14 are mounted on a resilient rail 15 clamped by bolts 16 to the side wall of the cylinder gap. Screw devices 17, 18 at each end may be manipulated to bend the rail about its centre and thus cause the pads other than the centre one, to be moved radially of the cylinder by varying amounts. The tapering of the rail towards its ends and the provision of notches 19, 20 aid in the bending of the rail. In a second embodiment the set of grippers and pads are split into three groups, each outer group being mounted on a rail pivoted at its inner end to the side wall of the gap and having a screw device such as 17, 18 at its outer end. In a third embodiment, each pad of each of the end groups of the second embodiment are slidably mounted in the rail and are spring-biased towards the axis of the cylinder.
