A furnace wall or roof comprises an outer metal shell 1 with a thin insulating lining 2, metal support castings 4 engaging members 3 attached to said shell and carrying refractory hangers 5, refractory bricks 6, 7 and 8 assembled round said hangers, and outer insulating slabs 12, the assembly defining cooling air passages 14 between adjacent rows of hangers 5.The latter and bricks 6, 7 and 8 are formed with interlocking recesses and ribs. Slabs 12 may be made of block insulation, concrete or brick or may be cast in situ.
