Abstract

1,087,621. Feeding tobacco. A. SCHMERMUND. May 19, 1965 [May 28, 1964], No. 22021/64. Heading A2C. Tobacco is fed down a tube 1 to the bottom of a vertical, conical or bell-shaped vessel 2, fixed to a support 3 keyed to a shaft 6 which is driven through a pulley 4. The tobacco is forced upwards by centrifugal force over an annular member 8 which forms the upper part of the vessel 2. A guide ring 12 co-operates with the annular member 8 to form a channel for the tobacco. The guide ring 12 is provided with a flange forming a pulley 13 for a driving belt 16 which extends around the major part of the periphery of the pulley 13 and around two idler rollers, one of which is shown at 17. The pulley is mounted for rotation about a stationary support 15. Fixed to the member 8 is a perforated ring 21, suction being applied through a channel 22. A layer of tobacco is formed on the ring 21 which is taken off by a stationary stripper rail (Fig. 2, not shown) and fed to rod-forming means. In a second embodiment (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown) suction is applied to the belt 16, a part of the belt being perforated and overhanging the lower edge of the flange 13. In a third embodiment (Figs. 6 and 7, not shown) the tobacco is collected on an L-shaped belt inclined to form a V and carried by a disc arranged below the annular member 8. At the take-off point the belt is turned so that one limb of the L is horizontal and the other vertical.
