Abstract
1,083,379. Chains. MOOG INDUSTRIES Inc. Aug. 18, 1966, No. 37122/66. Heading F2Q. A sprocket drive chain comprises alternating torsional links 22 and rigid links 20, each rigid link having sprocket-engaging rollers 38, 40, and each torsional link being twistable about an axis perpendicular to the roller axes. The rollers 38, 40 are rotatably mounted on sleeves 36 which are press-fitted in apertures 34 formed in the ends of links 22, the sleeves 36 being rotatably mounted on pins 24 which are pressfitted in side plates 26, 28 of rigid links 20. Each flexible link 22 is laminar and comprises a plurality of thin strips 30 of spring steel which may be held together by sleeves located in the apertures 34. In a modification, rigid links comprise spaced side portions 54, Fig. 5, into which bushes 56 are press-fitted, and flexible links 50 have pins 58 press-fitted into apertures at their ends, the pins 58 being rotatably mounted in the bushes 56. In a further modification, each rigid link comprises a cast member 60, Fig. 7. The chain may be used to connect sprockets whose axes lie at right-angles to each other.
