Abstract

Phosphoric acids of high P2O5 content, i.e. not less than 68% w/w on an impurity-free basis, are prepared by continuously feeding a wet-process phosphoric acid to a first heating zone from which is continuously withdrawn a more concentrated acid having a P2O5 content of 67-72%, and passing this to a second heating zone, continuously withdrawing the final acid of high P2O5 concentration, e.g. not less than 76% P2O5. The temperatures of the heating zones are maintained at the boiling-points of the acids therein by releasing "hot combustion products" into the zones. Preferably, they are released into at least the second zone through a vertical dip tube so as to maintain a stable bubble thereof at its lower end, and the acid in the zone is preferably caused to flow in a toroidal path surrounding the bubble. The volume of liquid in at least the second heating zone is preferably related to the volumetric flow rate of the acid through it such that concentration of acid is rapidly effected.
