Abstract

1,139,577. Glass manufacture. CORNING GLASS WORKS. 13 April, 1966 [19 April, 1965], No. 16252/66. Heading C1M. [Also in Division F4] Molten glass is homogenized whilst being flowed along a horizontal forehearth by being subjected to the action of a pump 16 which forces the glass downwards through a cylindrical path 18 into a confined horizontal passage 20 below the forehearth and a pump 26 which forces the glass upwards in a confined oval path 22 from the confined passage 20 to the horizontal path of the forehearth, the glass then having a uniform flow front. The pump 16 is centrally situated in the cylindrical well 18 communicating with the passage 20. The pump 26 comprises two counter-rotating stirrers having their axes along the major axis of the oval well 22. The counter-rotating stirrers send the glass through two helical paths such that high spots form along the forehearth sidewalls and such that the two paths merge to give a uniform parabolic flow path. The method is particularly useful where coloured or other additions are to be added to the glass within the forehearth.
