In the homogenising of molten glass two impellers 122, 124 rotating in opposite directions in the same horizontal plane about vertical axes spaced apart longitudinally in the direction of flow of the molten glass are provided in the forebearth 10. In the form shown in Fig. 10, which is a plan, the impellers co-operate with a protrusion 166 on one side wall 160 of the forebearth to ensure the splitting of the first and second circular movements of the glass induced by the impellers. In another form three impellers in line may be used. Colourant material which may be molten glass or may be coloured particles that have been fire-polished may be added to the melt before homogenization.
