Abstract

847,272. Glass manufacture. PENBERTHY, H. L. Nov. 18, 1958 [Sept. 1, 1958], No. 37099/58. Addition to 804,505. Class 56. In the homogenising of molten glass fed along a confined channel by a pair of impellers rotating in opposite directions as in the parent case, the impellers are constructed so as to give not only a transverse flow but also a vertical pumping action. As. shown in Fig. 2, the impellers 24, 26 are propeller type blades set at an angle on vertical shafts 20, 22. As in Fig. 3, the blades 42, 44 are straight set on shafts 38, 40 set at an angle to each other. In both cases, the blades overlap and are set at 90 degrees out of phase. The blades are also set adjacent the bottom of the channel 10 or 28 and are long enough to be adjacent the sides 14, 16 or 32, 34 of the channel so that the molten glass 18 or 36 is fully homogenised. The device is mainly for use when colourant is introduced into the stream of molten glass, either in the form of molten glass, either in the form of molten glass or as particles in chunk or frit form.
