Abstract

1,081,132. Depth charges &c. FIJN MECHANISCHE INDUSTRIE BECKER'S SONS N.V. Aug. 6, 1964 [Aug. 6, 1963], No. 32136/64. Heading F3A. A hydrostatically operated detonator has a spring-loaded striker pin 7 locked by a rod 16 connected to a membrane 20 sensitive to hydrostatic pressure, the rod releasing the pin by movement against a spring 18 adjustable to correspond to a valve of the hydrostatic pressure at a desired water depth. A striker pin 7 and its holder 13 are movable under the influence of a spring 8 but in the safe position are held locked by balls 14 engaged in a groove 15 in the holder 13. Water enters via apertures 30 to move the membrane 20 and the rod 16 against the spring 18 until the balls 14 can enter a recessed portion 17 of the rod to release the holder 13 and pin 7 which strike the detonator; apertures 35, 36 allow for the escape of air compressed by the membrane. The case 19 is shaped with a narrow diameter portion between its ends to facilitate gripping in the hand. The rod 16 is locked prior to use by a withdrawable forked member 32. For safety should the projectile fail to reach the desired depth the screw connection 24 is made to leak slowly so that in time the pressure is equalized on both sides of the membrane.
