Abstract
974,637. Depth charges. J. MENA Y VIEYRA DE ABREU. March 21, 1962 [March 25, 1961], No. 10830/62. Heading F3A. [Also in Division B7] A detonating fuze, which may be used to fire depth charges and marine mines, comprises a head member 10 from which depend coaxial tubes 19, 25, the inner tube housing firing and safety means and the annular space between the tubes forming an expansion chamber which is sealed by a membrane 21 placed between two washers, the washers and membrane being held in position by a cylindrical cover 27 screwed on to the outer tube 25. Within the tube 19 is a piston 12 carrying a detonator 20, which is aligned with a firing pin 22 axially placed in a booster charge 24. The piston is immobilized by a spring-supported member 16 which prevents movement of balls 14 housed in the piston wall and engaging a shoulder 15 of the inner surface of tube 19. During transport and storage, the member 16 is secured by a safetypin 7 extending through openings 4, 6 and 13. This pin is curved at one end 9 and has a latch 8 at the other end to secure it in position. To withdraw the pin, a cover 1 is unscrewed and the latch 8 rotated to lie within the profile of the pin. With the pin withdrawn, the fuze is ready for use and may be screwed into the body of a mine by means of threading 28. When the mine is laid, water enters through an opening 3 and as the hydrostatic pressure increases the member 16 is depressed against the thrust of spring 17. At a given depth the balls 14 escape and the piston 12 is freed. Piston 12 is then driven against the membrane 21 and, after puncturing the membrane, hits the pin 22 which set off the detonator 20. The depth at which the fuze operates is controlled by the choice of spring 17 and a vent 29 allowing passage of air between the interior of the piston 12 and the annular chamber 25. The membrane 21 may be of tinfoil and the spring 17 may be regulated by the insertion of one or more discs within the piston 12.
