Abstract

A zinc phosphate coating containing metallic zinc is produced on a ferrous article e.g. a steel panel, and then the coating is electro-phoretically painted, e.g. with black paint comprising a water soluble resin, to provide corrosion resistance. The coating may be produced by making the article cathodic in a phosphate coating bath to deposit zinc simultaneously with phosphate, or a zinc phosphate coating may be first formed by immersion in a chlorate-accelerated zinc phosphate bath and zinc electro-deposited into the pores of the coating from a plating bath of composition; 250 g/1 ZnSO4, FH2O, 16 g/1 NH4Cl, 32 g/1 Al2(SO4)3, 20 g/1 H3BO3 and 13 g/1 dextrin. The coating may be subsequently stored.
