Abstract
<PICT:1077787/C6-C7/1> Pig iron is produced in a rotary furnace 1, rotating at 10-40 revs/min., by introducing a preheated and prereduced iron ore or concentrate with a solid carbonaceous reducing material such as coal or coke into the furnace, e.g. from a hopper 7 feeding a conveyer 14 in a casing 2, supplying oxygen or an oxygen-rich gas via at least one lance 5 above the bath surface to give a controlled oxidation to most of the CO formed by the final reduction to CO2 above the reducing layer obtained on the liquid bath surface so that the bath temperature is maintained at 1200-1450 DEG C., passing the exhaust gas formed e.g. through the casing 2 to a pretreatment furnace e.g. drum 3 to preheat ore or concentrate having a higher O content than Fe3O4, e.g. fed in by conveyer 6 and hopper 10, to 600-900 DEG C. and prereduce it to Fe3O4. Gaseous or liquid particularly hydrocarbon fuel may be additionally fed into the furnace 1.
