Abstract

A chlorine-free mixed fertilizer is prepared by converting KCl to KNO3 with N2O4 dissolved in a reaction medium of 60-70% HNO3 at ambient or lowered temperature, eliminating the NOCl from the resulting suspension of KNO3, preferably by increasing the temperature gradually to 50 DEG C., treating the suspension with crude phosphate and neutralizing the resulting product with ammonia. N2O4 may be recovered and recycled by means of the reaction 2NCl + O2-->N2O4 + Cl2, the products of which may be easily separated. Crude phosphate may be added in amount 1.1-1.2 kg per kg of HNO3 present in the KNO3 suspension. Superphosphate, triple phosphate or ammonium phosphate may be added to give a fertilizer with desired N, P, K contents.
