Abstract
A mould (10), for lining with graphite (see Divisions B3 and C1) for casting titanium &c., is made by the lost wax process from silica powder and silica sand, with sodium silicate, an alginate or ethyl silicate as a binder, or from alumina or zirconia, and cured at 1600-1800 DEG F. for one hour.ALSO:A mould 10 has a porous refractory shell lined with pyrolytic carbon, e.g. produced by heating the mould to between 1300 DEG and 2200 DEG F. and passing through it a hydrocarbon gas such as acetylene or methane. Small amounts of boron may be incorporated with the graphite. The mould 10 is made by the lost wax process from silica powder and silica sand, with sodium silicate, alginate or ethyl silicate as binder, or from alumina or zirconia, and cured at 1600-1800 DEG F. for one hour. A cup-end 14 is sealed to a graphite base plate 12 with an inlet 18 for the hydrocarbon gas. A graphite susceptor 20 inside an induction coil 22 is supported on the plate and closed by a cover 24 with an outlet 26. This whole arrangement is put in a vacuum chamber and the mould is heated by the coil and the gas is introduced at 18 to flow out from vents 30. <PICT:1075883/C1/1>
