Abstract

In a method of preparing a sand-resin mould or core, the volatiles are driven off from the mould or core prior to pouring operations by heating it in a non-oxidizing atmosphere. Preferably the mould is heated for 1/4 to 1 1/2 hours at a temperature of from 300 DEG F. to 1400 DEG F., in an atmosphere of natural gas, methane, carbon monoxide, or helium. Alternatively the volatiles driven from the resin binder function as a non-oxidizing atmosphere. The heating in the non-oxidizing atmosphere is preferably carried out after the mould is stripped from the pattern plate after curing by baking in contact with the pattern plate, but alternatively the normal air curing step is replaced by baking the mould in the non-oxidizing atmosphere while in contact with the pattern. Phenol formaldehyde and melamine formaldehyde are quoted as examples of resin binders.
