Abstract

1328250 Refractories COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE 27 Nov 1970 [28 Nov 1969] 56342/70 Heading C1J An isotropic refractory material having a composition by weight of 60-65% B-silicon carbide, less than 5 % free silicon and the balance graphite and pyro carbon and an open porosity of less than 1% is manufactured from a carbon matrix of density 1À4 to 1À5 g./cm.<SP>3</SP> and a porosity of about 30%, by heating the matrix in vacuo to a temperature at which #-silicon carbide formation occurs, then immersing the matrix in vacuo in a liquid silicon bath at substantially the same temperature for impregnation, with consequential formation of silicon carbide, then removing the matrix from the bath and contacting it with a porous graphite member to remove the excess liquid silicon by capillary attraction. The carbon matrix used is one prepared by agglomerating and compacting a graphite powder of a grain size of 1 to 100 Á. and then giving the compacted material a cracking treatment in the presence of hydrocarbon gas, for example natural gas, at approximately 900‹ C., conditions being adjusted to provide the required density; conventional binders are used in the agglomeration. For the impregnation the matrix is heated to 1500- 1700‹ C. before immersing in a silicon bath of that temperature. An amount of silicon equal to about 90% by weight of the carbon is absorbed and mostly converted into the #- carbide. Contacting of the impregnated matrix with porous graphite is effected at 1500-1600‹ C., during which free silicon in the matrix pores is converted to further #-silicon carbide and surface liquid silicon is removed by capillary attraction.
