Abstract

Woven or knitted elastic fabric comprises yarn of polyurethane or natural or synthetic rubber spiralled round water soluble polyvinyl alcohol yarn. The polyvinyl alcohol yarn may be soluble in cool, warm, or hot water, or water at a temperature higher than 100 DEG C. its degree of polymerisation may be 500 to 3000 and it may be partially or completely saponified. The yarns are shrunk in water below the dissolving temperature either before or after knitting or weaving; in the latter case, the fabric is initially of open construction. Finally, the polyvinyl alcohol is washed out.
