Abstract

A firedamp-proof delay composition having a burning time of less than 1 cm./second consists of silicon, lead oxide, and a metal which has a heat conductivity greater than 0.5 c.g.s. units, for example copper, aluminium, or silver, or a metal which forms an alloy with silicon having a eutectic point less than 1300 DEG C. and also has an oxide with a heat of formation less than 1200 cals/gm., for example nickel or iron. In an example 70% by weight of copper powder is added to a 25-75 mixture of silicon and red lead.
