Abstract
107,246. Hawkins, W. J. June 23, 1916. Projectile fuses.-Consists in providing a percussion fuse with a centrifugally-operated split sleeve surrounding and in interlocked engagement with the inertia pellet, for positively holding the pellet at " safe " after the discharge of the projectile until the acceleration has ceased. The pellet or plunger 19 has a rear undercut flange 23, which is adapted to be engaged by the bevelled rear edge of a split sleeve 24. The sleeve is provided with longitudinal grooves 26, Fig. 2, which divide the sleeve into connected segments, the weight of which is predetermined according to the angular muzzle velocity of the projectile. When the projectile is fired, the sleeve 24 sets back initially, locking the pellet 19, but when the acceleration is over, the sleeve expands by centrifugal force and releases the pellet, thus arming the fuse. The fuse body comprises two parts 3, 13, the rear part 3 having a gaine 5, integral therewith.
