HAROLD I. BRAYTON, 01j' DOVER, NEWNJERSEY.
' POIN T-DETON ATIN G FUSE.
Applicationniea Augusta, i924.- serial no. 730.1296.l
(61m ,UIDEE THE ACT 0l' mm 8V, 1,888; 28 STAT. L. 635.)
To all whom, it may conce/m.'
Be it known-that I, HAROLD M. BRAY'roN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Dover, county of Morris, and State of New Jersey, have invented an Improvement in Point-Detonating Fuses, of which the following is a specification.
The invention described herein may be used by the Government, or any of its ofi ficers er employees in prosecution of work for the Government, or by any other person in the United States, without payment to me of any royalty thereon, in accordance with the act of March 3, 1883.
The subject of this invention' is a point detonatin fuse.
The ob]ect. of the present invention is to provide a bore safe supersensitive point detonating fuse in which the various elements 4are so arranged as to produce a practical mechanism for manufacture and assembl which will function dependently when lired from a n.
Accor ing to theinvention, the booster charge is carried in a separate container for the purppse of eliminating body distortion in-r t e booster loading operation and also with the object of insuring safety in assembling, as the booster container is the last element to be assembled.
In that type of fuse which is characterized by a movable striker head positioned in the nose of the fuse, considerable diffiqulty has been encountered in the usual.,
crimping operation, with the result that the striker is frequently held immovable and the fuse accordingly rendered inoperative. To overcome this objection, an annular cap is formed with a fixed inturned rim and the capheldin place by crimping the body.
There is a so leased rotor which positively prevents premature explosion duringstorage and transportation. v
To these and other ends, my invention consists in the'construction, arrangement, and combination of elements, described hereinafter and pointed out in the claims forminia part of this cation.
practical embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawi in which,
ig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view if the improved fuse takenl on the line` 1-1 provided a centrifugally rer of Figure 3 and showing the parts insaflety4 or unarmed position;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-'2 of' Fig. 4; y -v Fig. 3 is a sectional View taken on the line 3 3Y of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1 but in armed position. l.
Referring to the drawings by numerals of reference: A body 10 formed with afn eccentric cavit' 11 is tapped to receive a container 12,wh1c carries a booster charge 13 (spaced `from the cavity by a cup 14. l
The cavityjll is approximately 1n the longitudinal centerof the fuse and h ouses a rotor 15, loose] mounted on a pin 16 which is carried by the body 10,. as seen in Figure 2.
The rotor is approximately'T-shaped and is normally held in safety or unarmed position by centrifugal ^pins 17 to dispose a blind cavity 18 laxially of the fuse.
One wing of the rotor is formed with an aperture 19 throughout its le h tofrictionally retain a cup 20, whic carries a primer detonator 21. When in unarmed sition the 'primer detonator is out of line with the center ofthe fuse.
The opposite wing of the rotor is formed with a slot 22 for the ,reception of a lockingpin 23 which is ada ted to be thrown outward through centri uggl force to engage in la'slot 24 in the dy- 10 to hold the rotor in armed position with the detonator 21 in line with the booster charge and af firing pin. The slots 22 and..,24 are aligned by means of a stop pin 25, carried by the body and projecting into the .cavity to engage a recess 26 formed in a wing of the rotor.
showing the rotor The forward face of the body 10; is lformed f with an annular groove 27 for the reception of an annularcap 28, which lis held in place by crimping the body as at29.l O
The cap 28 is formed with axed in` turned rim 30y for the urpose of contining and limitin the of a hollow stri er head 31 forming the nose of the fuse and provided with an annular flan 32. The central portion of the exterior of the striker 'is depreed as at .33 to merge with a stem 84, which ca rorwgard movement f n' an opening 36 in the 18 of` the rotor.
adapted to move in A fuse body. When lin unarmed position the point end of the firing pin is disposed in the blind cavity The striker is'provided near the base of the depression 33 with a pluralit of diagonal ports 37 for permittin in ux of air into the striker during fiig t of a projectile. The wall of the str-ik-v er is provided with apertures 38 which are in advance of the cap 28 when in armed position.
In o eration, while the projectile is in the bore o the gun, the striker head is held in rearward position through linear accelerries afixed firingpin 35 ',ation. Immediately upon leaving the gun,
.. of the fuse (as at 29, and
` rotor mounted in the the influx of air through.. the ports 37 will cause the striker head to move forwardly until extruded where it will be held by the static air pressure developed within the striker. The air pressure exerting a` constant force in all directions overcomes dlynamic pressure on the exterior face of t e striker. r
As the striker is extruded to functioning position, the oint end of the' firing pin carried thereby 1s moved clear of the blind cavity of the rotor; The centrifugal ins of the rotor are moved outward when t e pro-l jectile attains al redetermined rotational velocity in fiight,` t to swing to armed position with the primer detonator 21 disposed axially of the fuse.
It will be noted that by crimping the body roviding a fixed inturned rim 30. there can e no interference tending to render the movable striker head inoperative. Furthermore, as the booster is "separately loaded and secured to the body as a final step in the assembling o eration, the casing of the fuse will not be istorted during the loading operation and an additional element of safety is consequently AAprovided.
While in the foregoing there has been illustrated and described such combination and arrangement of elements as constitute the preferred embodiment kof myinvention, it is nevertheless desired to emphasize the fact that interpretation of the invention should only be conclusive when made in the light of the subjoined claims. Iclaiin: 4 l 1, A fuse including a body formed with an eccentric cavity, a centrifugally released cavity, said rotor rovided with a primer detonator and a b 'nd ereby enabling the rotor` cavity, said body being further formed with an annular. groove in its forward face, an annular cap firmly held inthe groove and formed with a fixed inturned rim, an air balanceablestriker head movable within the pin carried by the striker, the point end o said firing pin being normally disposed in the blind cavit but adapted to be withdrawn therefrom fore rotation of the notor, tainer threadedly secured to the body closing the cavity.
2. A fuse including a body formed with an eccentric cavity in the approximate longitudinal center of the fuse, acentrifugally released safety member rotatable in the cavity, a primer detonator carried by said mem-` ber, a separately loaded booster container ada ted to complete the fuse in assembling for `olding the safety memberin place, said body being further vformed with an annular groove in its forward face, an annular ca firmly held in the groove and formed wit a fixed inturned rim, and an air balanceable striker head movable within the cap.
3. A fuse including a body formed with an eccentric cavity, la centrifugally released safety member rotatable in the cavity, a separately loaded booster container adapted to complete the fuse in assembling for holding the safety member in place, said body being further formed with an annular groove in its forward face, an annular cap disposed in the groove and secured by crimp ing the body, said cap providedwith a fixed inturned rim. and la movable member within the'cap. f
4. A fuse including a body, said body being formed with an annular groove in its forward face` van annular cap disposed in the groove and heldin place by crimping the body, said cap provided with` a fixed inturned rim, a movable member kwithin the cap, and a booster container `adapted to be separately loaded and threaded to the rear portion of thebody as the final step in assembling the fuse. i
