Abstract

N-(b -hydroxyethyl)-a -pyrrolidone is produced by contacting N-(b -hydroxyethyl)alkylamine with carbon monoxide, in the liquid phase in an inert reaction diluent at a temperature of 125-350 DEG C. and a pressure of 75-450 atm., in the presence of a cobalt or rhodium carbonyl carbonylation catalyst, the ratio of the gramatoms of cobalt or rhodium to moles of N-(b -hydroxymethyl)allylamine being from 0.004 to 0.4. The cobalt or rhodium may be introduced into the mixture as the metal, a salt of an organic acid, e.g. the naphthenate or octanoate, or as a metal oxide. Suitable diluents include hydrocarbons containing 6-12 carbon atoms and free from non-aromatic unsaturation, alcohols containing 1-5 carbon atoms, N-lower alkyl-pyrrolidones and, particularly ethers containing 4-14 carbon atoms and up to 3 ether oxygen atoms.
