Abstract

A process for the production of aliphatic carboxylic acids comprises contacting in the liquid phase a monoolefin containing 1-5 carbon atoms, carbon monoxide and water at a temperature of from 260 DEG to 350 DEG C. and a pressure of from 2500 to 6000 p.s.i.g. (176-423 kgm./cm.2) in the presence of a carbonylation catalyst and in the presence of boric acid. Catalysts specified include nickel and cobalt metals, alloys, salts, oxides and hydrides. The examples relate to the preparation of propionic acid using ethylene as olefinic starting material and nickel propionate as catalyst in continuous processes.
