Abstract

In a process for the production of alkali salts of cyclohexane carboxylic acids by the catalytic hydrogenation of alkali benzoates in aqueous solution, the hydrogenation is carried out in the presence of catalysts containing metallic nickel and/or cobalt and at a temperature of 120-220 DEG C. preferably 140-180 DEG C. and at a pressure of above 20 atmospheres. The material used for the hydrogenation may consist of the alkali benzoate solutions obtained by direct extraction with aqueous alkali hydroxide from the crude oxidation products of toluol. The catalytic hydrogenation may be carried out continuously by conveying the aqueous alkali benzoate solutions through stationary catalysts or by causing them to flow together with suspended catalysts. Several examples are given.
