Abstract

Prepn. of methane comprises reacting carbon monoxide and hydrogen in an inert liquid medium in the presence of a catalyst which is the product of reacting at least one Ni cpd. with at least one reducing aluminium cpd. in an inert liquid. The quasi-homogeneity of the catalyst ensures both a good thermal diffusion with a good removal of heat from the strongly exothermic reaction and also good accessibility of the catalyst to the reactants; these conditions not having been simultaneously obtd. by previous catalysts. Pref. Ni cpds. are carboxylates of 6-20C fatty acids, esp. an 8-10C mixture. The Al cpd. is pref. of formula Al(R)3 at least one R being hydrocarbyl, the remainder H, hydrocarbyl or alkoxy; esp. a trialkyl aluminium. The Al/Ni atomic ratio is pref. from 1:1 to 20:1 esp. 2:1 to 10:1. The inert liquid pref. comprises at least one saturated hydrocarbon. The pref. reaction conditions are 1-50 esp. 1-20, bars pressure; 100-450 degrees C. temp. esp. above 200 degrees C.
