Abstract
<PICT:1047627/C4-C5/1> An apparatus for reforming a light hydrocarbon comprises a combustion chamber (not shown) containing one or more catalyst-containing tubes 14 for reforming the hydrocarbon as it traverses the tubes, the tubes leading to one or more chambers 22 containing a bed of oxidation catalyst 24, the oxidation chambers being outside and close to the combustion chamber and having means, e.g. pipes 26, 28, for delivering an oxygen-rich gas to the chambers 22. Unconverted hydrocarbon leaving the tubes is reformed in the oxidation chambers, of which there may be a separate one for each tube. The tubes 14 are disposed vertically in the combustion chamber and may depend into the oxidation chamber, Fig. 2, or may terminate at the top of the oxidation chambers, Figs. 3, 4 (not shown). Oxygen may be delivered to the bottom of the chamber 22, Fig. 2, or to the top, Fig. 3, product gas leaving at the opposite end. The product gas may be quenched either by liquid sprayed into the bottom of the oxidation chamber, Fig. 3, or by being bubbled through a liquid vessel, Fig. 4. The two catalysts may be the same material, e.g. a Group VIII metal, e.g. nickel.
