[Class 1 (i)] The synthesis of hydrocarbons from carbon monoxide and hydrogen is effected in narrow externally cooled tubes, in which the catalyst is centrally disposed so as to leave a narrow annular space through which the gas flows. The catalyst may be in the form of a cylindrical core, or in pellets, balls, fragments &c. of appropriate size. The tubes may be 5-25 mm. in diameter and the average breadth of the annular space may be 0.2-2 mm.
