Abstract

1,071,111. Reciprocating pumps and motors. CULL DEVELOPMENT Ltd. and W. CULL. Dec. 31, 1963 [Jan. 2, 1963], No. 183/63. Heading F1A. [Also in Division F2] The driven rotor 31 of a pump used in a pumpmotor hydrostatic split-torque transmission in a motor-vehicle (see Division F2) has five axiallyspaced pairs of radial cylinders 40, 41 feeding through ports 43 in the rotor, and housing ballpistons 45 supported by circular rings 46, which, to adjust pump-stroke, can be pivoted to eccentric positions about a pin (48), Fig. 6 (not shown), parallel to the pump axis, by supplying fluid pressure to pistons 50, 51 lying in a plane at right angles to that of the pivot pin (48). This stroke-controlling fluid pressure is controlled jointly by the vehicle accelerator pedal and an input-driven governor, and is provided by a makeup pump 18, having a rotor 32 fast with the mainpump rotor 31 and carrying a roller piston 38 in a radial slot and rotating in a circular bore of a casing (33) biased eccentrically by adjustable springs 4. The output pressure of this pump acts on the side (35) Fig. 7 (not shown) of the casing (33) and tends to make the casing (33) concentric with the rotor to give no delivery at a pressure determined by the springs 34. Two fixed stroke main transmission motors (27), (28), fed by the main pump, have cylinder blocks fast with gears (68, 67) Fig. 2 (not shown) and have radial cylinders with ball pistons bearing outwardly against twinlobed cam rings (75). The cylinders are connected by ports in a common stationary valve block to the main pump. The main pump and the motors (27), (28) may act as a motor and pumps respectively.
