Abstract

1,070,172. Rolling tubes. BLAW-KNOX CO. Jan. 31, 1966 [Feb. 15, 1965], No. 4126/66. Heading B3M. A tubular blank W is rolled between pairs of grooved rolls 6<SP>1</SP>-10<SP>1</SP> while supported by a mandrel 14, the mandrel being moved, during the rolling process, relative to both the blank and the rolls. The mandrel, which is attached to a thrust rod 15, is moved to the right by means of a chain-driven thrust block 16 until it lies between the rolls 9<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 12 (not shown). The blank is advanced by a pusher 19 to a position between the rolls 6<SP>1</SP>, a heat sensor 147 signalling the presence of the blank, to initiate operation of a control beam 18. The thrust block 16 is at this stage in contact with the control beam and the grip of the rolls 6<SP>1</SP> on the blank is tending to move the mandrel and thrust block to the right. The speed of advance of the beam 18, controlled by motor-driven screws, thus determines the speed of advance of the mandrel. Conveniently the mandrel is advanced from its position between the rolls 9<SP>1</SP> to a position between the rolls 19<SP>1</SP> during the complete rolling operation, but the mandrel can be retracted during the latter part of the operation. In both cases wear on the mandrel is spread over the working length of the mandrel. Adjacent roll pairs are set at 90 degrees to each other the pairs 6<SP>1</SP>-9<SP>1</SP> reducing the tube, while the pair 10<SP>1</SP> merely ensures that the finished blank is uniformly round in section. The mandrel 14 and also the rod 15 are hollow and accommodate a central tube (102), Fig. 7 (not shown), which is fed with water under pressure for cooling the interior of the mandrel. A further tube (103) carries lubricant for the inside of the blank (W) as the mandrel is advanced, bores (107) serving to direct the lubricant on to the blank. A trough 120 drains off any excess lubricant. A conduit (115) supplies a lubricant for the exterior of the mandrel. A blank W, before being moved on to a trough 12 aligned with the rolls, is positioned on an inlet table, parallel to the trough and provided with motor-driven rollers and hydraulically-operated kick-out arms. Retractable rollers 57 support the mandrel bar 15 when it is not positioned within a blank.
