Abstract

1,069,822. Ignition systems. ROBERT BOSCH. Feb. 10, 1966 [Feb. 13, 1965], No. 5799/66. Heading F1B. [Also in Division H2] The invention relates to an ignition system which comprises switch means for controlling the primary current of an ignition coil in response to the output of a generator coupled to the engine. According to the invention the generator comprises an armature 10 having at least one pair 11, 12 of magnetic conductors mounted in diametrically opposed peripheral regions thereof and at least two pick up coils 15, 18 wound on iron cores and located in two separate non -diametrically opposed positions around the armature, the magnetic flux linking one of the two pick up coils, and therefore the magnitude of the signal induced therein being dependent on the engine speed and the inlet manifold vacuum and the system further comprises signal summation means 16 for adding the signals induced in the two pick up coils to produce a control signal for controlling the switch means. As shown the core 14 carries an energizing coil 20 which is connected to at least one source of direct current. When the engine speed is low the output of the generator 21 is also low with the result that only a small magnetizing current will flow through the energizing coil 20. The slider of the variable resistor 22 is coupled to the mechanism which controls the opening and closing of the butterfly valve in the engine carburetter (not shown). The switch means associated with the primary circuit of the ignition coil may comprise a multivibrator 25. The engine flywheel may comprise the armature.
