Abstract

1429351 Automatic control of exhaust gas ROBERT BOSCH GmbH 19 April 1973 [22 April 1972] 18935/73 Heading G3R [Also in Division F1] For an I.C. engine supplied via a carburetter of the type in which a fuel orifice opens into a mixing chamber in which the pressure is adjusted to be substantially constant a system is provided in which the size of the orifice is adjusted in a continuous manner in response to electrical signals which are proportional to the oxygen content of the exhaust gas. The output of an oxygen sensor (16), Fig. 1 (not shown) is compared with a reference (at 17) and the result integrated by a device (18) whose time constant may be automatically varied according to the duration of the error. The result is amplified to effect the required adjustment. In the carburetter shown two fixed coils 43 are wound in opposition and act upon a permanent magnet armature 31 attached to a needle valve 34. It is stated that since the net magnetic field is zero when the O 2 content is correct displacement of pressure responsive piston 22 cannot react upon the armature. In one alternative embodiment Fig. 3 (not shown) only one coil is provided, the current through which is average for zero error, the armature is of soft iron and the magnetic effect operates against a spring (54) whose rate is chosen to compensate for the effect of piston displacement. No fluid damping is provided. In a second alternative Fig. 4 (not shown) a single coil is carried by the piston; the armature is not damped but the piston is. In another alternative Fig. 5 (not shown) the orifice in which the needle valve acts is rotatable by an electromagnet to vary the opening to a passage which by-passes the main orifice. In a modification the flow through the main orifice may be adjusted by an electromagnetically operated spool valve or lamellar closure (iris "diaphragm"). In a further alternative Fig. 6 (not shown) the arrangement is similar to that of Fig. 2 except that the armature (soft iron) is attached to the piston which therefore is adjusted, carrying the needle with it. In a final alternative Fig. 7 (not shown) the chambers 25 and 28 of a carburetter like Fig. 2 are inter-connected via an electromagnetic valve Fig. 8 (not shown), operation of which varies the pressure difference between 25 and 28 and hence the height of the piston and needle.
