Abstract

1399848 Regulating engines; controlling ignition timing NISSAN MOTOR CO Ltd 5 April 1973 [ 28 April 1972 12 Sept 1972] 16393/73 Heading F1B An I.C. engine ignition timing change-over system comprises an ignition coil 7, Fig. 4 a distributor with a spark advancing terminal A and a spark retarding terminal R, a change-over relay which, when its coil is de-energized connects terminal A to the coil 7 and when its coil is energized connects terminal R to the coil 7, a circuit being arranged so that when the engine idles under given conditions the relay coil is energized by a D.C. power source, the circuit including a thermostatic switch which closes at low engine temperatures and a throttle valve opener 5 comprising solenoid means 5a connected in parallel with the relay coil opens the throttle valve when the relay coil is energized. Switches 4, 9 are closed when respectively a gear shift lever is in neutral or a clutch pedal is depressed whilst a thermostatic switch 3 closes at low engine temperature. When ignition switch 2, thermostatic switch 3 and either of neutral switch 4 or clutch switch 9 is closed a relay 6 is closed to connect the spark retarding point R of the distributor 8 to the ignition coil 7 to retard ignition timing. At the same time a solenoid 10, Fig. 5 of a three-way valve is energized to close a passage P 1 to atmosphere via a filter 14 whilst connecting the induction manifold to the diaphragm chamber of a throttle positioner via passage P 2 , passages 16, 13 and passage P 3 thus opening throttle 5b. In a modification of this embodiment the neutral switch 4 and clutch switch are replaced by a vehicle speed switch (17), Fig. 6 (not shown) and an accelerator pedal switch (18). In another embodiment a catalyst temperature switch (19), Fig. 7 (not shown) and a throttle pedal switch (20) replace switches 3 and 8
