Abstract

1,069,613. Door operating devices. WILLIAM NEWMAN & SONS Ltd. Nov. 19, 1965 [March 4, 1965; Oct. 14, 1965], Nos. 9216/65 and 43544/65. Heading E2M. In a swing door assembly comprising a plurality of independently mounted swing doors, each formed of a glass panel and metal frame, and movable from an in-line position across the door opening to a staired out-of-use position at one side of the opening a spring door closer incorporating a fluid check is coupled to the top of each door and means is provided to disconnect the coupling when the panels are slid to one side to the stowed position. The doors may be coupled to the door closer in pairs. The lower pivot 19 is mounted on wheels 13 to run in a casing 14 and the upper pivot 27 is carried by a platform 21 slidable on rods 23 to the stowed position. The pivot 27 carries a plate 30 in which the coupling means is mounted, the door closer 9 being mounted along the lintel and having a depending spindle 10. To uncouple the door and its upper pivot from the closer 9 the door is swung through 90‹ to the open position when the door and its pivot 27 and the plate 30 can be slid away from a block 35 clamped around the spindle 10. A wedge plate 32 having an inclined slot 33 guided by pins 34 provides clearance once the door has started to move sideways. A latching device locks the plate 30 to ensure that the plate and the block 35 will re-engage when the doors are returned to the "in-line" position. Chains 48 along the upper and lower guideways are connected to a vertical shaft (49 Figs. 8 and 9) at the side of the door opening to ensure even running of the doors in the top and bottom guideways. The end doors adjacent the door jambs can have spring closers mounted in the floor since these doors are not slid sideways when stowed.
