I INVENTOR 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Jamea [02" Filed July 8, 1935 ATTORNEY Patented July 14, 1936 PATENT OFFICE SWIVEL HANGER, CARRIER, AND CONTROL FOR SLIDING DOORS James Cornish, Chicago, Ill.
Application July 8, 1935, Serial No. 30,396
1 Claim.
This invention relates to a swivel hanger, carrier and control for sliding doors of garages and like buildings, and has for the primary object the provision of a device of this character which will permit operation of the doors around the corner in the least possible space, whereby the opening and closing of the doors will require only a slightly greater width and length than the object housed in the building and which will permit the door opening to be located closer to the side wall of the building than heretofore possible when employing door hangers of the conventional construction.
With these and other objects in view, this invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts tobe hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
7 For a complete understanding of my invention,
reference is to be had tothe following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view showing a garage or like building with the doors thereof mounted by my invention.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary horizontal sectional view showing the parts positioned with the doors in closed position.
Figure 3 is a similar view showing parts positioned during the initial opening of the doors.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary horizontal sectional 7 view showing the swivel hanger, carrier and control operating upon a straight portion of the track.
Figure 5 is a side elevation illustrating the swivel hanger, carrier and control.
Figure 6 is an end view illustrating the swivel hanger, carrier and control.
Figure '7 is a sectional vew taken on the line 'll of Figure 5. Figure 8 is a view similar to Figure '7 showing another position of the control lever.
Figure 9 is a sectional view taken on the line 9-9 of Figure 5.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral I indicates a garage or like building having a door opening 2 to be opened and closed by sliding doors 3. A track 4 is secured to the inner walls of the building I on which the doors slide and includes straight portions 5 and 6 connected by a curved portion 1. The doors 3 are in the form of a train, that is, a series of doors are connected by hinges B. The door A is termed the advancing door of the train of doors and is 55 equipped with my invention, while the other doors may be equipped with conventional type of hangers slidable upon the track 4.
Secured at some selected place on the door A, between its free edge and its hinged edge, is a plate 9 having formed upon its upper portion 5 relatively spaced horizontally disposed flanges I9 provided with pairs of aligned openings l l. A lever I2 has one end pivotally and detachably connected to the flanges H) by a pin I3 extending through one pair of the openings II. The 10 other end of the lever I2 is pivotally and detachably connected to a Vertically arranged hanger I4 carrying at its upper end an arcuately curved member l5 to which are journaled grooved rollers l6 that ride upon the track 4. A latch housing l5 I5 is mounted on the plate 9 and slidably supports a spring pressed latch bolt IS, the head of which is beveled and operates through a suitable opening l'! in one of the flanges ID to engage a corresponding latch opening I8 formed in the 20 lever l2. A pull chain I9 is attached to the latch bolt for retracting the latter from the latch opening ill of the lever l2 to free the latter for pivotal movement. The under face of the lever I2 at opposite sides of the latch opening I8 is beveled, 25 as shown at 20, to permit the latch bolt to readily ride into the latch opening I8.
The purpose of the pairs of openings II is to permit the lever [2 to be reversed on the plate 9 so that the device may be adapted to either right 30 or left-hand sliding doors.
The doors when in closed position lie within the door frame of the door opening, as shown in Figure 2, with the rollers I6 resting upon the curved portion 1 of the track 4. 35
In operation, to open the doors, the advancing door A is first swung on its hinges to clear the door A of the door frame, the lever pivoting relative to the plate 9 at this time. The swinging movement of the door is continued until the lever 40 moves into the space between the flanges l0 and is locked therein by the spring pressed latch bolt. The train of doors is then slid endwise, my inven tion causing the advancing door to follow the track to the side of the building. To close the 45 doors, said doors are slid endwise upon the track and the latching bolt is disengaged from the lever, permitting the lever to pivot on the flanges so that said doors may move into the door frame when reaching door-closing position. The doors 50 when in door-closing position may be secured in such a position by any conventional means (not shown).
The device and lever l2 may be made in different lengths and when made in a length longer than that shown in the drawings will permit the doorway to be positioned closer to the side wall of the building.
Having described the invention, I claim:
A sliding door hanger comprising a vertically arranged door attaching plate, spaced horizontally arranged flanges carried by said plate, a pivot removably secured to the flanges and adapted to be mounted in the latter adjacent either of 10 the ends of said flanges, a horizontally arranged lever secured adjacent one end to said pivot, a vertically arranged bracket journaled on the lever for rotation about its own axis and in either direction, a member secured to the bracket, trackengaging rollers journaled to said member, and a latch means carried. by the plate to engage with the lever for securing the latter against pivotal movement and in a position paralleling the flanges.
