Abstract

1,069,374. Bearings. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. April 29, 1966 [April 29, 1965], No. 18009/65. Heading F2A. The effect of prolonged stationary periods on a ball or roller thrust bearing which supports heavy-machinery on an upright shaft is relieved by coupling an auxiliary drive thereto and rotating the shaft through a few degrees at periodic intervals of time. In an embodiment, a grinding mill has a vertical shaft supported on a roller thrust bearing. The shaft is driven from the shaft of an electric motor, through reduction gearing. The end of the shaft of the electric motor which is opposite to the gear-mounted end carries a plate having a square-shaped aperture therein, and a portable air-driven motor, having a squared shaft which mates with said aperture, periodically rotates the shaft of the electric motor through about five degrees.
