Abstract

889,916. Rolling. MOELLER & NEUMANN G.m.b.H. April 11, 1960 [April 11, 1959], No. 12780/60. Class 83 (4). In a multi-roll mill including work rolls 1, 1<SP>1</SP> each supported by intermediate rolls 2 which are in turn supported, in part through a centre roll 4, by outer support rolls 5, 6, a further intermediate roll 3 is included between the centre roll 4 and the intermediate rolls 2 to reverse the direction of rotation of the centre roll 4 so that the rotation of all rolls in contact with the support rolls is the same and a solid construction can be used for the latter to facilitate driving. The work rolls 1, 1<SP>1</SP>, the intermediate rolls 2 and the centre rolls 4 are freely floating in a lateral direction and are merely retained axially by a cover plate. The intermediate roll 3 is supported in end bearings which are guided for laterally restricted movement in the workroll plane. In this manner escape of the free rolls due to unbalanced frictional forces e.g. of rotation and reeling is prevented. The support rolls have fixed bearings and may be supported at the ends only or at additional points intermediate the ends. If the work rolls are of very small diameter the intermediate rolls 2 must also be of small diameter so that the centre of each roll 2 may be within the angle α to prevent escape of the free rolls. The rolls 2 are then too small to take a direct drive and the support rolls 5, 6 must be driven. The support rolls are then either solid rolls with a continuous cylindrical surface or have intermediate divided bearings accommodated in ring grooves in the rolls. The gear drive includes three gear-wheels so that the direction of rotation of rolls 5 and 6 is the same. If the work rolls and intermediate rolls 2 are sufficiently large the rolls 2 may be driven in which case the support rolls may either be constructed as before or may comprise freely rotatable sections spaced along a stationary spindle. Rolls 1, 1<SP>1</SP>, 2 and 4 are exchangeable and the support rolls 5, 6 may accordingly be adjusted towards the rolling plane. Specification 826,000 is referred to.
