Abstract

889,062. Bearings. MORGAN CONSTRUCTION CO. Oct. 20, 1959 [Oct. 22, 1958], No. 35469/59. Class 12 (1). [Also in Group XXII] In an adjustment for a roll 12 having a thrust bearing 24 and a chock 28 adjusting members 33, 38, fixed in the chock co-operate with adjusting members 51, 52 which engage the sides of the bearing 24 and when rotated by a gear 74 move axially to adjust the axial position of the bearings 24 and-the roll 12. A screw-thread engagement is provided between members 33, 51 and 38, 52 respectively and the members 51, 52 are moved together by the gear 74. The gear 74 is mounted on a stub shaft 73 operable by a wrench in the case of horizontal rolls or by a worm and worm-wheel, Fig. 3 (not shown), in the case of vertical rolls. The working pressure is transmitted through an oil film bearing 16 to the chock 28, the bearing 16 being lubricated hydrodynamically through ports 19. The pressure exerted by the springs 57, 68 in the thrust bearing is adjustable by relative rotation of the members 51, 52 by disengaging one of the latter from the gear 74 and rotating the other.
