Abstract

523,777. Rolling. BISS, R. Dec. 14, 1938, No. 36500. [Class 83 (iv)] Mills for heavy reductions in the cold with small rolls, have one or both operating rolls supported by two or more auxiliary rolls the outermost rolls being in rolling contact with a rotary support ring running in bearings in the housing. On account of the reverse rotation of the lower roll 2 this is provided with additional intermediate rolls 6, the rolls 1 and 6 being supported by rolls 4, 5 supported by rings 7 which form the outer members of ball races the inner members being the housing. The rings 7 have teeth and are driven by gears on a shaft 32. The bearings of one of the rolls 5 are mounted for adjustment at right angles to a radius of the rings to vary the effective pass. In a modification only one small working roll is employed and pass adjustment is effected by screw operated wedges 31 Fig. 4. In another modification the bearings of the lower support rolls are in aligned radial guides in a member 15, Fig. 3, fewer supporting rolls being required. In another modification the member 15 is replaced by two members so that the angle between the guides may be varied for pass adjustment. The rings 7 may form the inner members of the ball race or may be supported by rollers or pads. The rings or the rolls or both may be driven and the work is preferably traversed independently, one of the drives being non-rigid as to speed.
