An expansible spindle 6 for supporting rolls of paper 23 rolled on to cardboard spools 22 is journalled at 3 in a non-rotatable bearing support 2, axially displaceably arranged in a swingable support arm 1, and has an end 9 on which a sleeve 11, formed with a flange 12, is slidably keyed and axially located in one direction by a ring 13 fast on the spindle end 9, the sleeve 11 carrying on its polygonal, toothed, or round surface a complementary bored elastic ring 17 which is clamped between two rings 18, 16 respectively fast with and freely mounted on the sleeve 11, thrust pins 19 being arranged between a plate 20 seated against a spindle flange 7, and the freely mounted ring 16 such that in operation the spindle 6 is moved axially until the end 9 enters the spool 22 and the flange 12 abuts the paper roll 23, after which further axial movement of the shaft thrusts axially through the pins 19 to compress and expand the elastic ring into engagement with the spool 22.
