A portable polishing machine particularly, for wax polishing motor vehicle bodies comprises an electric motor 18 (Fig. 1 not shown) driving a shaft 16 secured in a central bore 14 in a member 12 having an eccentric bore 22 receiving a pivot shaft 24 on which is rotatably mounted a polishing head 26, including a disc 28 supported on the shaft 24 by a ball bearing 30, a support member 38 for a polishing bonnet 50 being engaged over an annular rib 36 on the disc 28, and a counterbalancing mass 54 is carried by the member 12 and has its centre of gravity in a plane passing through the axes of rotation of the polishing head 60 and the shaft 16. In an alternative construction (Fig. 4 not shown) the polishing head is secured to a shaft which is journalled eccentrically in the member in which the drive shaft is centrally secured.
