Abstract

1,068,677. Casting processes; making valves. EATON " YALE & TOWNE Inc." April 15, 1965 [May 5, 1964], No. 16362/65. Heading B3A and B3F. In a method of making a smooth-surfaced metal object such as a valve plate, a mould is provided which has one or more serrations in at least one face of the mould cavity so that when pouring molten metal into the mould to form the plate, ridges are formed on the plate when the metal has solidified. These ridges are subsequently removed by machining for example, grinding, so as to form a smooth-surfaced article. The ridges perform the function of collecting the inclusions and impurities during the casting process, these defects being removed during the subsequent machining operation. The surface of the mould in which the serrations are formed may be flat or curved or formed by a solid of revolution.
