To prevent solidification of the metal and subsequent damage of the plug 3 of a distributer 2 between a ladle 1 and mould 4 for continuously casting steel, during the filling of the distributer, when there is a danger of solidification at the plug 3, the latter is completely lifted to allow the steel to flow immediately to the mould. When the danger is past the flow of steel is controlled normally by adjusting the plug 3.
