Abstract

1,066,633. Safety devices for tower-cranes. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. Dec., 14, 1964 [Dec. 12, 1963], No. 49122/63. Heading B8B. If the carriage traverse rope 6 of a tower crane breaks, a member 27, which supports a wedge 28 of hard-wood, is allowed to fall and becomes jammed between an eccentric wheel 36 and a bracket 24 thereby arresting the movement of the carriage 3 towards the outer end of the jib under the weight of the load. The wheel 36 is fast with the sheave 11 which is turned clockwise by a hoist rope 10 when the carriage moves towards the outer end of the jib. The periphery of the wheel 36 is toothed or knurled to enhance the grip on the wedge 28. The rope 6 passes through an eye in the top of the member 27. Winching in the hoist rope 10 will cause the carriage to move inwards and the load to be raised. The wheel need not be eccentric. The hoist rope may extend from the sheave furthest from the tower to an anchor and from the sheave nearest to the tower to the hoisting gear, the brake being arranged to act on the outer sheave.
