Abstract

1,118,978. Cranes with telescopic jibs. JEFFREY GALION MFG. CO. 13 Sept., 1966 [15 Sept., 1965], No. 40949/66. Heading B8B. When the hoisting rope 26 of a jib crane becomes taut, due to a lifting block 30 abutting the end of the jib when the jib is telescopically extended, a winch brake is disengaged so that the winch may be rotated by the pull of the hoisting rope, thereby preventing damage to the crane. At the same time that hydraulic fluid is supplied to rams 21a, 21b to extend the jib it is also supplied through a pilot line to the winch brake to release it. As the winch is turned by the pull on the hoist line, fluid is pumped through a relief valve which normally remains closed because it is set to a higher pressure than the normal relief valve for the crane.
