Abstract
1335386 Winches CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO 17 Dec 1970 [26 June 1970] 31078/70 Heading B8B The hydraulic motors driving winding gear 3 for the luffing of a boom 4 and the hoisting of a load hook 5 on a tractor, each comprise a stationary cylinder in which pistons are sequentially radially displaceable to drive a cam ring associated with the winding drum, and free run means wherein an hydraulic pressure differential is applied to opposite ends of the pistons to displace them radially inwardly out of contact with the cam ring, whereby the latter can rotate freely. The motor controlling the boom luffing is supplied from a fixed displacement pump through a three position valve for selecting forward, reverse or neutral control of the motor. A spring operated winch drum brake is released only by fluid pressure tapped from the motor supply line when the motor is being operated. A limit valve is provided to be operated by the boom to exhaust the fluid supply and therefore stop the motor, and a counterbalance valve is provided in the motor feed circuit to open at a predetermined pressure to maintain the boom at a particular attitude. A counterbalance weight 2 is displaceable transversely of the tractor centreline by a pair of hydraulic rams, supplied from a fixed displacement pump and actuable by a three position valve, which when in its neutral position permits fluid to be fed to the hoisting motor for the load hook 5. A counterbalance valve is provided in the ram feed circuit for maintaining pre-set ram extensions. A two-speed motor for the hoisting winch is supplied from a fixed displacement pump through a three-way control valve, a brake and counterbalance valve being provided similar to those associated with the boom motor. The free fall condition for the hoisting winch motor is achieved when the hoist motor three position valve is in neutral and a free fall valve is operated to release the motor brake and establish the pressure differential across the pistons causing them to move radially inwardly.
