Abstract

<PICT:1066212/C6-C7/1> In an assembly formed by one or more flowing mercury cathode cells for electrolyzing aqueous solutions of alkali metal halides and an amalgam decomposer, to avoid by-passing current through the decomposer a mercury/amalgam flow interrupter is provided between the cell or cells and the decomposer. The flow interrupter comprises a first drum/rotating about a hollow horizontal axle traversed by the feed pipe 12 for mercury/ amalgam, and a second outer coaxial drum 2 rigidly connected to but insulated from the first drum, and each drum having an opening 14 or 15, the openings being diametrically opposed so that at no time is there electrical connection between the mercury/amalgam in pipe 12 and that in the discharge passage 17. If the drums have a common axle, they may have a surface facing of ebonite, and a disc may be provided between the drums to hinder mercury movement over the walls Figs.4, 5 (not shown). In alternative arrangements each drum has more than one opening, the adjacent openings on the two different drums being separated by half the angle between consecutive openings in the same drum, the mercury flow being controlled to avoid overflow and hence direct connection between the drums. Water may also be introduced along the axle of the drum by a pipe 13 coaxial with but blocked from the pipe 12.
